Many more travelers are expressing interest in eco-friendly travel options. To satisfy this growing field there is an ever expanding list of Central and South American resorts qualifying for this status. Following are a few of our recommendations.

COSTA RICA
Costa Rica has led the field in eco-travel. One of the original eco-lodges in Costa Rica is Lapa Rios on the Osa Peninsula. Located on a private reserve, Lapa Rios Eco-Lodge is built in harmony with the surrounding forest and beach. The owners employ only people from the surrounding community and are committed to environmentally sound practices.

El Silencio Lodge & Spa has been designated as "Climate Change Friendly" by the Costa Rican Tropical Science Center. In addition to having a carbon-neutral certification, the hotel's guests are given the opportunity to offset the CO2 generated by their air and car travel. Located on 500 acres of tropical cloud forest in the Central Region of Costa Rica, this resort is well located for great adventure activities.
ECUADOR
Kapawi Ecological Reserve in the Ecuadorian Rainforest was built as a joint project between the Achuar, the native people of the region, and a tour operator in Ecuador. Their common goal was to develop the reserve with a minimum of cultural and environmental disturbances. The lodge is built according to the Achuar concept of architecture - not a single nail was used in the construction. Solar energy powers the lodge and heats the water. Guests are asked to use only the biodegradable soap and shampoo provided to protect the environment. These practices are just part of why Kapawi Lodge has earned the "Ecotourism Excellence Award" by Conservation International.
BRAZIL
Caiman Ecological Refuge is located on the Pantanal of Brazil. This refuge includes a cattle farm, a nature conservation program and Caiman Lodge, a pioneer in ecotourism. Caiman Lodge consists of three separate lodges, all offering comfortable facilities and the same standard of service.

Ecotourism has helped the Caiman Ecological Refuge find another way to protect the Pantanal while also helping in its sustainable development. The Pantanal is a treasure of natural beauty, teeming with plants and wildlife; a perfect destination for the wildlife enthusiast.
