Colonia del Sacramento
Located about two and a half hours west of Montevideo, Colonia is a 17th century Portuguese settlement. The historic colonial town is also accessible by a daily hydrofoil ferry from Buenos Aires. |
Punta del Este
85 miles east of Montevideo lie the peninsula beaches of Punta del Este, often described as "another Riviera." Hotels and privately owned residences are set among tall pine trees and white sand. Restaurants, recreational facilities and entertainment options abound. |
Estancias
Many gauchos still ply their trade and retain the customs of the forebears on the estancias (ranches) that dot Uruguay's "last frontier." A rising adventure here is a trail ride on horseback from estancia to estancia over a period of 3-5 days. Visit old forts along the way. |
