DIVING & SNORKELING
Bocas del Toro is one of Central America's premier diving and snorkeling
locations. The best sites here include Bastimentos Marine National
Park, Tiger Rock and Coral Cay. There is also good diving near Portobelo
and Isla Grande. Coiba Island is perhaps the country's best dive spot
and dive excursions here have set departures.
Diving is not permitted at the San Blas islands but there are a number of good snorkeling sites here as well as at the above mentioned sites.

HIKING & TREKKING
The National Parks of Panama offer many options for the hiking and trekking enthusiast.
From Chiriqui on the border shared with Costa Rica, to the Darien Province on the far south eastern border, there are many great options for hiking in Panama.

BIRDING
The Darien National Park is considered one of the most important natural
reserves of the country and occupies most of the southern part of
the Province. The park is home to thousands of mammals, reptiles and
birds. The Harpy Eagle, the world strongest eagle and Panama's national
bird, finds its home here. This reserve is considered one of the last
Central American refuges for the preservation of many species in danger
of extinction. In order to visit the park, you must have authorization
from the National Environment Authority.
Western Panama has some of the most awesome Central American Birds, The Resplendent Quetzal, Bare-necked-Umbrellabird and Three-wattle Bellbird are just a few. Traveling to western Panama can be very easy due to the good road system to most of the destinations.

FISHING
Because the waters off the Pacific coast of Panama are so virgin and remote that fish are everywhere, Panama fishing is considered by many to be the best in the world. Although it is possible to catch fish all year-round in Panama, some people identify prime time marlin fishing with the months of December-March. The Hannibal Banks are world renowned for monster marlin, giant yellowfin tuna, exciting sailfish, wahoo, dorado, jacks, roosterfish and cubera snapper. |
CULTURE & HISTORY
Panama is most famous for the engineering marvel, the Panama Canal
but there is much more in Panama than just the canal.
The Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands are colorful and enterprising.
The molas made by the Kuna women are world famous and are sold throughout
Panama. You can also visit this autonomous region and observe the
Kuna culture firsthand and purchase a mola directly from the artisan.
The Embera Tribe is from the Darien rainforest region of Panama. Although they now live in a modern village, they once lived a very primitive life in the rainforest. Considered master artisans, this tribe makes beautiful baskets and woodcarvings. You can easily visit a village on a day trip from Panama City. |
RAINFORST & JUNGLE
The Panama Canal rainforests are the most accessible in the world. Located just minutes from Panama City, Soberania National Park has an outstanding array of wildlife including several species of monkeys, sloths, birds and butterflies.
The tropical rainforest of the Darien National Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve of Humankind by UNESCO in 1981. The Darien region is diverse and includes mangrove forests, lowland forests and cloud forest.
Some of the Embera Indian families of the Darien region have migrated in recent years to the Chagras River area, less than an hour and a half from Panama City. It is now possible to easily visit a village and experience the customs and culture of the Embera in this rainforest environment. |
