Granada
Founded in 1520, Granada is the oldest city built by Europeans on mainland America that still exists in its original location. It is situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Cocibolca, 40 km. southeast of Managua. It has a rich colonial heritage and legacy for preserving some of the finest colonial-era architecture in the country. |
Masaya
Located 16 miles south of Managua, on the way to the colonial town of Granada, Masaya is a town where folklore lives in all its splendor. Traditional handicrafts such as large hammocks, embroidered dresses, hemp tapestries and carved masks are sold in open-air markets. Nearby is the crater of an impressive volcano surrounded by cliffs of solidified lava and patches of lush tropical forest. The view from the top is unforgettable. |
