CULTURE
The spirit of colonial times lives on in Granada, one of the oldest cities on the continent. There are many colonial buildings and churches in Granada, and walking around in the city can be a great way to see some of the elegant baroque monuments and churches. Close to the central park is the Convento San Francisco museum. Here you can see artifacts from the pre-Columbian cultures that were present in the area. Another interesting museum is the Spanish fortress La Polvora, located on the west side of the city.
Zapatera Island is located on Lake Nicaragua, about an hour by boat from Granada. It is an important archaeological site as the island was an ancient Indian mausoleum. The statuary nucleus found here is associated with Mesoamerican and Sudamerican cultures.

HIKING
Some of the best hiking in Nicaragua can be found around volcanoes. A short ride on a good road from Masaya will take you to through cliffs of solidified lava and patches of lush tropical forest to the rim of the Santiago Crater. You can hike around the crater. The views are unforgettable. |
FISHING
Massive Lake Nicaragua offers some of the best freshwater fishing in the world. The prize is an aggressive large bass called guapote. The amazing rivers that run into Lake Nicaragua are "untouched" and abound with huge Snook and Tarpon. |
