Otavalo Market
Located 70 miles north of Quito via a very scenic highway, Otavalo is home to the most colorful Indian market in South America. Every Wednesday and Saturday, the mountain Indians, brightly attired in blue, purple and scarlet ponchos, stream into town for market. The Otavalenos, a pre-Inca tribe with a thousand-year heritage as farmers and artisans, offer a great variety of homespun woolen material, tapestries, embroidered blouses and skirts and filigreed silver.
Cotopaxi National Park
Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world at 19,348 feet, is located at the center of Cotopaxi National Park, 2 hrs. south of Quito on the eastern flank of the Andes. Cotopaxi offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities including mountaineering, hiking, birding, horseback riding and mountain biking.
Amazon Jungle
The Oriente, or Eastern Amazon lowlands at the edge of the Andes, is the beginning of the world's mightiest drainage system, the headwaters of the Amazon. This vast tropical rainforest is rich and exotic. Several lodges offer packages which include jungle hikes, explorations in dugout canoes and visits to Indian villages.
Galapagos Islands
Six-hundred miles off Ecuador's coast is an archipelago of isolated isles known as Galapagos. This group of volcanic islands, now a wildlife sanctuary, hug the equator and stand beside the cooling Humboldt Current. As a result, seals and penguins from the polar regions enjoy co-existence with the most tropical of birds and beasts. And, because of the unique geography of the islands, the animal community had to adapt and evolve, and hence these species can be found nowhere else on earth. There are various sizes and qualities of boats that offer 3, 4 and 7 night cruises. Two shore excursions per day. A few hotels also have been built on Santa Cruz, offering day tours to some of the islands.
