Arenal Volcano
Approximately 2 ½ hrs. from San Jose, Arenal Volcano attracts visitors because it is an active, erupting volcano. During the day, rumbles can be heard and ash clouds can fill the sky. On a clear night, red lava can be seen rolling down the slopes. Spend a night or two at one of the nearby, quality lodges and enjoy some relaxing time in the hot springs. |
Poas Volcano
Poas, located less than 1 hr. from San Jose, last erupted in 1978, but has a constantly varying steam cloud boiling up from the fumaroles in its crater. There is an overlook at the edge of the crater with fantastic views of the banded rocks and ash that form the rim. It is best to visit Poas in the morning as clouds often form in the afternoon, making it difficult to appreciate the magnitude of the crater. |
Monteverde Biological Reserve
The reserve covers the upper slopes on both sides of the continental divide. It is a cloud forest with mosses, lush ferns and vines and epiphytes that cover tall trees. Paths wind for miles. There's more than one can see in a day. Mountain lodges are spread out throughout the local community along with casual restaurants and small craft shops. |
Tortuguero National Park
Located on the north Atlantic coast, Tortuguero National Park protects a unique series of natural inland waterways that are home to sloths, howler and spider monkeys, toucans oropendolas, parrots, morpho butterflies, sloths and many other species. Green sea turtles lay eggs on the beach July through September which hatch 2 months later. In addition, it is known as one of the world's richest fishing grounds for tarpon and snook. There are several eco-lodges along the waterways and tours are mostly by boat. |
Corcovado National Park
The Peninsula de Osa reaches out of the southwest into the Pacific Ocean. Corcovado National Park covers over 100,000 acres of the peninsula. This area is a pristine, virgin rainforest, with an incredible wealth of tropical flora and fauna. First Class and Luxury inclusive eco-lodges can be found throughout the peninsula. Domestic flights to Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez and boat and land transfers to the lodges are the only access. |
Hot Springs
The area near Arenal Volcano offers opportunities to relax and enjoy various hot springs. Tabacon is the largest and most famous one. |
Beaches
The entire Pacific coast attracts sun worshippers, sport fishing enthusiasts and surfers. First Class, Deluxe and Luxury lodges, hotels and resorts can be found all along the coast. Some of the more popular areas include the Gulf of Papagayo, Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio. International flights on major airlines land either in San Jose of Liberia. |
