Atacama Desert
North of Santiago lies the great Atacama, the driest desert in the world. Endowed with a special beauty all its own, the Atacama is a wonder at sunset, with the sands taking on a thousand different tones. It is also spotted with oases all the way up to the northern border. Among these, the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama is an absolute "must" to visit; it was the center of a Paleolithic culture that built impressive rock fortresses on the steep mountains encircling the green valley. Torres del Paine
The Cordillera del Paine is a small but spectacular mountain group in Torres del Paine National Park, located 244 miles north of Punta Arenas. The best known summits are the three Towers of Paine. They are gigantic granite monoliths shaped by the forces of glacial ice. Views are breathtaking. Hikers can opt for a day trip to see the towers or trek for several days. Rustic lodges can be found in the park. |
