Atacama Desert
North of Santiago lies the great Atacama, the driest desert in the world. Endowed with a special beauty all its own, the Atacama is a wonder at sunset, with the sands taking on a thousand different tones. It is also spotted with oases all the way up to the northern border. Among these, the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama is an absolute "must" to visit; it was the center of a Paleolithic culture that built impressive rock fortresses on the steep mountains encircling the green valley. Other highlights of Atacama include the Valley of the Moon, Atacama Salt Lake, El Tatio Geysers and Los Flamencos Natural Reserve. Several high-end lodges can be found in Atacama.
Chilean Wine Valleys
Mountain peaks, fertile valleys and green rolling hills in between provide the perfect setting for growing world-famous wine grapes. Important valleys are Aconcagua, Casablanca, Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, Curico, Maulle, Itata and Bio Bio. Elegant wine vineyards offer tours, gourmet lunches and dinners and quality accommodations.
Lake District
Famous for its spectacular panorama of bright emerald and turquoise lakes whose surfaces mirror snow-capped volcanoes and sprawling forests, the Lake District is picture perfect. Puerto Montt, in the south of the Lake District, is the starting point for amazing cruises through the fjords and hanging valleys of the glacial Chilean coastline. Or cut through the Andean lakes into Argentina aboard a modern catamaran which departs from the Petrohue pier.
Torres del Paine
The Cordillera del Paine is a small but spectacular mountain group in Torres del Paine National Park, located 244 miles north of Punta Arenas. The best known summits are the three Towers of Paine. They are gigantic granite monoliths shaped by the forces of glacial ice. Views are breathtaking. Hikers can opt for a day trip to see the towers or trek for several days. Rustic lodges can be found in the park.
Cruise Ships
The Skorpios cruise ships are built to sail the southern fjords of Chile. The expedition cruise ships M/V Mare Australis and M/V Via Australis embark from Punta Arenas and Usuaia and travel legendary maritime routes through the Strait of Magellan, along channels, bay and fjords, passing glaciers, snow-capped peaks, islands and unexplored forests of incomparable beauty. Expeditions are seasonal.
