FOZ DO IGUACU
The name Iguacu means "big Water" in a native Indian language, and denotes one of the great waterfalls of the world. There are 275 separate waterfalls that plunge from varying heights over a two-and-a-half-mile crest. Iguacu Falls is the largest waterfall in the world in terms of water volume. The setting itself is idyllic as the falls are in the middle of a national park with trails and footpaths allowing for spectacular vantage points and settings. There are a variety of excellent hotels including das Cataratas, which is located in the national park directly overlooking the falls.
Pantanal
The Pantanal, considered the world's largest wetland area, covers an area of approximately 150,000 sq. km. and is located in the upper Paraguay River Basin. The Pantanal, which is actually a floodplain, is noteworthy for its extraordinary biodiversity and abundance of wildlife. Eco-lodges can be found here, in both Mato Grosso and Mato Grasso do Sul. During the wet season, November to April, the entire Pantanal floods. By the end of the dry season, only a few spots of water are left, and this is when the famous congregations of wildlife occur.
