FISHING
What sets Belize apart from other destinations is its amazing diversity
12 months a year. Cast for bonefish, permit & tarpon along tidal flats
and mangroves. Mangrove, mutton and yellowtail snapper can be found
inside the barrier reef, while snapper, grouper, jacks and barracuda
swim in the deeper waters outside the reef. Black grouper are targeted
from December to April.
Most offshore fishing takes place during tournament season, when anglers set their sights on kingfish, dorado, wahoo, tuna and occasional sailfish or blue marlin.
River tarpon and snook are found in the numerous rivers and streams. |
SCUBA & SNORKELING
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second longest reef in the world. It
exceeds all other Caribbean dive destinations in terms of size and
diversity. The most popular dive resorts are located on Ambergris
Caye. Other quality dive destinations can be found south of Dangriga
and also in Placencia. Outside the main reef are three rare atolls,
one which contains the celebrated Blue Hole. Several all-inclusive
dive resorts can be found on the atolls. |
SPELUNKING/CAVING
Visitors can hike, kayak, canoe or inner tube through caves full of
ancient Maya artifacts. Caves Branch River, Actun Tunichil Muknal,
and Barton Creek Cave are a few of the popular excursions. During
the rainy season (June-October), water levels may not allow entrance
into some systems. |
CANOEING
Canoeing is a very nice way to relax and explore the rivers and lagoons
of Belize. You'll spot colorful birds, monkeys and exotic tropical
flora. Most jungle lodges offer canoe rental for a minimal fee or
sometimes free of charge. In jungle lodges near San Ignacio, you can
actually conclude your stay with a departure by canoe. Spend a couple
hours floating down the Macal River to San Ignacioto where a driver
will meet you with your luggage and continue your journey. |
BIRDING
For bird watchers of any level, this hobby fits perfectly within your
Belizean adventure. Blue crowned motmots, collared aracaris, red-lored
parots and toucans can be found in Orange Walk area near Lamanai.
Over 300 species are also found throughout Cockscomb Basin Wildlife
Sanctuary including keel-billed toucans, scarlet macaws, king vultures
and great curassows. |
HORSEBACK RIDING
An afternoon exploring the forest and trails of the Maya Mountains
in the Cayo District is well spent. Along the way, your naturalist
guide will point out the unique plant and wildlife species native
to the area. Half-day tours are operated in the morning or afternoon.

GOLFING
A championship golf course is available on the very secluded Caye
Chapel island. Day golf is available by ferry from Ambergris Caye
or spend a night or two in deluxe beachfront accommodations. |
