The Mayan World covered more than 5000 sq. kilometers and included the present day nations of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru among others.

Guatemala
Tikal in Guatemala can be reached by air from Guatemala City and is easily reached by land from Belize. Tikal was one of the more important Mayan centers of its time. A lot of the site has been excavated making this an extremely interesting and educational excursion. It is possible to stay in the park, at nearby Lake Petén area or in the town of Flores.
Belize
Caracol is the largest Mayan archaeological site in Belize. Caracol was rediscovered in 1937 but it wasn't until 1980 that the importance of the site was realized. Investigations are still continuing at this site.

There are many other smaller sites throughout Belize including Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Lamanai. These sites as well as Tikal in Guatemala can be easily visited while staying at a number of inland resorts.
Honduras
Copan is located just 1km from the town known as Ruinas de Copan. This site is considered very important for a number of reasons, but mainly for the number of hieroglyphics found there. A visit to Copan is a wonderful addition to any dive or snorkeling trip to Honduras. There are a number of lodging options available and we recommend a guided one or two night tour. Tours are also available from Guatemala to Copan.
Peru
Peru is probably most famous for the mysterious and mystical Inca site of Machu Picchu.

This "lost city" is one of South America's major travel destinations. There are a number of ways to visit this site including the train from Cusco and by the classic Inca Trail hike.

In addition to Machu Picchu, there are other sites easily visited while in Cusco including Sachsaywaman, Quenco and Tambo Machay.
