Patagonia, the southernmost tip of the Americas on
both sides of the Andes, is a privileged destination --- one of those
rare sites of astounding beauty still largely undiscovered, untouched.
From Puerto Montt, the Carretera Austral (Southern Road) leads south
into the temperate rainforest, through 1,000 kilometers of fjords,
turquoise lakes and hanging glaciers, finally blocked by the imposing
400 km. ice field known as Campo de Hielo Sur. Beyond this ice mass is a land of even sharper
contrasts, where the trackless windy expanse of the Patagonian pampa
runs up against the towers and spires of Torres del Paine. This
world-famous national park, with its glaciers, lakes and unique
wildlife, is the highlight of any Chilean adventure. Just north of the
Straits of Magellan lies Punta Arenas, the capital of the region and
departure point for visits to Tierra del Fuego and the frozen continent
of Antarctica. Call GL tours for your Patagonian adventure into Chile’s
final frontier. |
