Discover unbelievably beautiful
scenery --- perfectly shaped volcanoes; snow-covered Andean peaks;
pristine lakes, rivers and fjords dotted with islands; dense rainforests
with natural hot springs and spectacular waterfalls; wide green valleys
and diverse native flora and fauna --- all in Chile’s Lake District.
Activities include hiking, trekking, fishing, water sports, boat trips
and horseback riding. Puerto Vargas, on the southwestern shore of Lake Llanquihue,
touts modern hotels and unparalleled views across the lake
to the Osorno Volcano. The Cruce de Lagos trans-Andes cruise connects
Puerto Montt with Bariloche, Argentina, via a series of ferry crossings
of Andean lakes, including the spectacular glacially-carved Todos Los
Santos Lake. Partial crossings are available. Originally, this territory
was home to the Mapuche Indians, the fierce, resourceful aborigines who
successfully resisted the Spanish conquest for some 300 years.
Their influence can still be seen today in the typical architecture,
cuisine and crafts of the Lake District. |
